Women Speak

Restoring the Dignity of African girls.

This project was set up after the founder of PYP visited Zimbabwe recently and a young woman approached her and asked for a sanitary pad which she intended to use at a wedding the next day.

'I visited Zimbabwe in April this year and was approached by a young woman (17) who asked for a sanitary pad because she was going to a wedding the next day and she wanted to feel 'normal' instead of using the rags that she had been using. She explained how at one point she had used newspaper as sanitary ware as she could not afford to buy normal pads or knickers. Other young women told me how they missed school for a few days every month when they are on their period.'

The economic crisis in Zimbabwe has left many women unable to afford underwear and sanitary products thus threatening their dignity. Many women have substituted sanitary ware with rags or newspapers which has led to various vaginal infections.

Operation 'Dignity Restored' is aimed at restoring these young womens dignity by donating underwear and sanitary ware as part of a HIV and AIDS sensitising campaign for young girls. We are collecting knickers of any size and colour as long as they are new as well as pads and tampons.
