I am fresh off a phone call with a prospect about building a client-attractive business. This prompted my search for the meaning of the word “attract.” I am very much in love with my dictionary and use it often in my business! It is one of the things you take away from being a former teacher!
Here are some similar words and phrases I found:
- Pull towards you;
- Be a magnet for;
- Create a centre of attraction;
- Catch the fancy of;
- Appeal to;
- Fascinate;
- Interest;
- Draw somebody’s attention;
- Get response;
- Draw something/somebody closer
I recommend that any time you think of marketing your business you aim at doing all of the above!
One way to “catch the fancy of” or “be a magnet for” is to say the things your audience want to hear. And to speak their language while you are at it! Talk about their problems the way they talk about them, not your qualifications and your various claims to fame!
In the study of Magnetism we see that opposites attract and likes repel. Well, in client-attraction it is the other way around:
Like attracts like and opposites are avoided!
You can become like your audience and learn their language by spending time among them.
You could:
1. Participate in online discussions and forums where they go to sound off;
2. Attend networking events where hot industry issues are discussed;
3. Send out surveys and offer incentives for participating;
4. Read your industry’s trade journals and magazines;
5. Meet up with people in your target market and chat about their issues;
6. Visit blogs in your field and comment constructively there. Enable email notifications of responses, to keep tabs;
7. Read your Twitter and FaceBook streams to know what people are saying;
8. Join LinkedIn groups and participate;
9. Position yourself as the one people come to for help;
10. Actively solicit client feedback
Of course, you do not need to do all of this. Just choose what appeals to you and do it often.
Keep a notebook or computer folder where you store your findings. Use the same words and phrases as your audience in your marketing copy and message. They will start to notice what you are saying and pay attention to you. With an offer they cannot resist they will be drawn to you. Then you can start to build mutually beneficial relationships with them.
It pays to mind your language when building a client-attractive business. And I mean real cash in the bank!
Feedback:
• How do you monitor the pulse of your target market?
• In what ways are you speaking their language?
• What statistics can tell how effectively you communicate?
• Do you watch your statistics?
